Ethiopia
Diocese of Gambella, Ethiopia (from 2020)
The first Rooted in Jesus team travelled to Ethiopia in February 2020 at the invitation of Bishops Kim Seng Kuan and Vincent Rajan. The invitation came at a historic time, just a few weeks after the announcement that a new Anglican Province of Alexandria is to be formed. The new Province will contain four dioceses: Egypt, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and Gambella. Bishop Rajan Vincent Jacob has been appointed as Area Bishop for Gambella. He has three priorities: to raise up and train Christian leaders, to give oversight to community development projects, and to continue to promote peace-building through youth ministry and the Mother’s Union.
Gambella borders on South Sudan, and the church in Ethiopia has been growing rapidly in the past few years mainly due to the Sudanese refugees who fled Sudan and South Sudan and brought their faith into the refugee camps in the Gambella region of the country, which borders South Sudan.
The four day training conference was held on the shores of the Bishpftu Guda Lake, and led by a team of facilitators from South Africa and the UK, all with extensive experience of implementing Rooted in Jesus. The conference was attended by 40 clergy and seminary students.
Rooted in Jesus will be used primarily in the local languages of Thok Naath (Nuer) and Anywak, and is also available in Amharic and Arabic.
